West Nile virus is an arbovirus (short form to describe the virus transmitted by Artra prune ³) that causes encephalitis (brain inflammation or encephalitis mass lica). Arboviruses are transmitted by an insect that feeds on blood, such as mosquitoes.

The virus was first identified precisely in the west of the river Nile in Uganda in 1937 and has since been found in Africa, Eastern Europe, Western Asia, Middle East and the United States (including Puerto Rico ).
